Beat Grögli was consecrated as the twelfth Bishop of St. Gallen in a solemn service in St. Gallen Cathedral on Saturday. He succeeds Markus Büchel, who is retiring.
The consecration service on Saturday morning in St. Gallen Cathedral followed a centuries-old ritual. Due to the expected high level of interest, the ceremony was also broadcast live to the neighboring reformed church of St. Laurenzen.
The ordination included the laying on of hands and the Litany of All Saints. The newly elected bishop lay down on the floor in front of the altar.
Beat Grögli later received the various insignia of his office. These included a ring, the mitre and the crosier. Only after the consecration is Grögli considered to have been liturgically installed in his office and can exercise all the rights and duties of a bishop.
The current Bishop of St. Gallen, Markus Büchel, has offered his resignation to the Pope after his 75th birthday in August 2024. He had been bishop since 2006.
The search for a successor then took place in a complicated process. Finally, the new pope had to approve the proposal of the St. Gallen cathedral chapter. On May 22, the election of 54-year-old Beat Grögli as the new bishop was finally announced.
