Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with members of the politburo of the Islamist Hamas in Istanbul ahead of a meeting planned for Monday on the ceasefire and further steps in the Gaza Strip. This was reported by the state broadcaster TRT. According to TRT, they discussed the status of the ceasefire and the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

According to Fidan, the foreign ministers of the eight nations who met with US President Donald Trump in New York in September will take part in the talks planned for Monday. In addition to Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Pakistan and Indonesia were represented at the meeting.

The talks will focus on the question of how to proceed with the second phase of the ceasefire, Fidan said on Friday. Among other things, the planned formation of a stabilization force would be discussed.

The Gaza war was triggered by the massacre carried out by Hamas members and other terrorists in Israel on October 7, 2023. Around 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 people were deported to the Gaza Strip.

Turkey has good contacts with Hamas and played an important role in brokering the ceasefire. The ceasefire came into force on October 10 and is fragile. The ceasefire was part of the first phase of US President Donald Trump's peace plan. The second phase includes the disarmament of Hamas, which the Islamists reject.

During a state visit on Thursday in the presence of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his hope that Turkey would exert its influence on Hamas in order to reach the second phase of the agreement.
