The foreign ministers of Germany, France and the UK are calling for an "immediate return" to a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. "The resumption of Israeli attacks in Gaza is a dramatic step backwards for the people of Gaza, the hostages, their families and the whole region," reads a joint statement published by the government in London on its website. "We are appalled by the civilian casualties and urge an immediate return to a ceasefire."

Israel's defense minister had previously threatened the Islamist Hamas with the capture of further areas in the Gaza Strip. The longer Hamas refuses to release hostages, the more territory it will lose to Israel, said Israel Katz according to his office. He had instructed the army to also call on the local population to flee in this case. He did not give details of the specific form that the seizure of territory would take. Some Israeli media spoke of an annexation of the areas.

Since Tuesday night, Israel's army has once again been taking massive action against Islamists in the coastal strip, effectively ending the ceasefire that had been in place since January 19. "We call on all parties to resume negotiations to ensure that the ceasefire is fully implemented and is permanent," reads the statement from Germany, France and the UK. This includes Hamas releasing the hostages. Israel was also called upon to allow humanitarian aid to Gaza again.
