Biden will travel to Germany in mid-October. Biden is expected to meet Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin and then visit the US airbase in Ramstein.
Biden in Germany
Although the White House did not provide any details on the location of the high-level Ukraine meeting, it can be assumed that it will take place in Ramstein. The format is also known as the Ramstein Group and is usually chaired by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. The USA and Germany are Ukraine's largest arms suppliers.
One of the main topics of the Biden visit is support for Ukraine. It is Biden's first bilateral visit to Germany in his four-year term of office and the first visit by a US president to Berlin since Barack Obama visited the then head of government Angela Merkel (CDU) in the Chancellery in November 2016 on his farewell tour.
New billions in aid
Biden will also receive Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj at the White House today. He intends to present details of his "victory plan" for Ukraine. Before the meeting, Biden announced billions of euros in new support for Kiev - he released more than seven billion euros. The package includes another Patriot air defense system, long-range glide bombs and drones.
Selensky immediately expressed his thanks for the aid. "We will use this support in the most efficient and transparent way possible," the head of state promised on Telegram, mentioning the support of both Republicans and Democrats. He also praised a training program for Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets. Newly introduced sanctions that affect Russia's ability to finance the war against Ukraine are also important.
Ukraine has been fending off a Russian invasion for over two and a half years. During a visit to the USA, Zelenskyi is campaigning for continued support for his country. In this context, Kiev has been pushing for weeks for the release of long-range weapons for use against targets deep inside Russian territory. Moscow has issued new nuclear threats in this case.
