Outgoing US President Joe Biden has described January 6 as one of the most difficult days in American history due to the storming of the US Capitol by angry supporters of then and future President Donald Trump. "Our democracy was literally put to the test. And thankfully, our democracy has held," Biden said on Sunday (local time).

Biden was speaking in the White House to newly elected Democratic members of Congress. Addressing them, he said: "Now it is your duty to tell the truth and remember what happened. Do not allow January 6 to be rewritten or even erased."

The rioters had tried to stop the US Congress from certifying Biden's election victory after a speech by Trump. Today, the election results from last November are due to be certified - with Trump as the winner.
