US President Joe Biden has reacted calmly to threats from Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin regarding a possible Ukrainian use of far-reaching Western weapons against targets in Russia.

When asked by a reporter what he thought about the Russian president's latest threats, Biden said at a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the White House that he did not think much of Putin. At the same time, Biden emphasized that the Kremlin leader would not win the war, but Ukraine would.

Putin had said that the use of long-range Western precision weapons against targets deep in Russian territory should be seen as NATO involvement in the war. "This will mean that the countries of NATO, the USA and the European countries are fighting with Russia," said the Kremlin leader in response to a question from a journalist on state television in St. Petersburg. Russian UN Ambassador Vasily Nebensia referred to Russia's nuclear weapons in the United Nations Security Council.

At the meeting with Starmer, Biden wanted to discuss Ukraine's desire to use far-reaching Western weapons against targets in the Russian hinterland. However, the White House had dampened expectations in advance that there could be an announcement from the USA after the meeting. There has been no change in the US government's position on this issue, it said.

Starmer was also vague after the meeting with Biden. "This is not about a specific decision," said the British Prime Minister. But the topic would of course be taken up again in a few days at the UN General Assembly in New York with a larger group of people.

Ukraine wants to deploy Western weapons in the Russian hinterland

Ukraine, which is supported by the West, has long been demanding that the USA and Great Britain allow the deployment of long-range missiles in the Russian hinterland. Their declared aim is to disrupt Russian logistics and attack military airfields of the air force far beyond the Russian-Ukrainian border.

According to official statements, the USA is limiting the use of its weapons against Russia to repelling the Russian offensive against the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. The British government has not yet made any concrete statements on the question of what exactly it is allowing Ukraine to do with the Storm Shadow cruise missiles it has provided.
