BKW CEO Robert Itschner speaks out in favor of more local wind power. "We think that this is also an interesting technology for Switzerland," he said in an interview with the Handelszeitung (Thursday edition).

"Wind power is a key component in all European plans for the expansion of electricity generation," said Itschner. And BKW has built up a sizeable wind portfolio in various countries over the past twenty years.
"In principle, there is considerable potential for wind energy in Switzerland," Itschner continued. However, the expansion depends on public acceptance. "We will certainly not be able to expand wind power to the extent that the potential would allow."
But if Switzerland could produce around 1 to 2 terawatt hours of wind power in winter, that would be very helpful in reducing the winter electricity gap. According to Itschner, this would require the installation of 200 to 300 turbines - depending on size, technology and location.
In 2024, fewer than 50 wind turbines were producing electricity in Switzerland as a whole.
