Bolivia's ex-president Luis Arce has been arrested on corruption charges just one month after taking office. Vice President Edmand Lara announced that the police had arrested him. "All those who have stolen from this country will have to pay back every cent and answer to the justice system," said Lara in a video message. According to media reports, the arrest was based on allegations of embezzling money from a fund for indigenous peoples between 2006 and 2014.

At the time, Arce was still Minister of Economy in the left-wing government of then President Evo Morales. The Attorney General's Office requested his arrest for dereliction of duty and economic offenses in connection with the administration of the fund, according to the arrest warrant published by the media.
Rodrigo Paz Pereira was only sworn in as Arce's successor in Bolivia at the beginning of November. The handover of office marked the end of an era of left-wing governments in the South American country that lasted almost two decades. Paz belongs to the Christian Democratic Party "Partido Demócrata Cristiano".
