Roll backwards: The USA is withdrawing the punitive tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump against Brazil due to the criminal proceedings against former President Jair Bolsonaro. The additional import duty of 40 percent of the value of goods on a large number of Brazilian food products is affected. These include beef, coffee and various fruits, according to the White House. Trump has recently come under increasing pressure in the USA due to rising food prices.

The USA introduced the additional tariffs in July. Trump described the action against former President Bolsonaro (2019-2022) as politically motivated. Bolsonaro, who is considered a close ally of the US president, was sentenced to more than 27 years in prison in September for an attempted coup d'état. The decision had severely strained relations between the two countries. According to the White House, the lifting of the tariffs follows talks between Trump and Brazil's head of state Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Lula welcomed the decision and said he was "happy". "These things will happen if we manage to win the respect of the people," he said.
