Brazil's imprisoned ex-president Jair Bolsonaro has undergone surgery for a bilateral hernia. The operation in a hospital in the capital Brasília was successful, his son Flavio Bolsonaro announced on Platform X. According to a report by the news portal G1, the 70-year-old will now remain in hospital for a week. The former head of state has already had to undergo several operations in recent years after being stabbed and seriously injured during the 2018 election campaign.

A federal judge had previously authorized the operation. The former president (2019-2022) has been serving a prison sentence of more than 27 years for a coup attempt since the end of November. He is accused of planning a coup against the government of his successor Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after he was voted out of office.
However, the judge rejected a request by Bolsonaro's lawyers to serve his sentence under house arrest for health reasons. He justified this with Bolsonaro's repeated breaches of conditions and escape attempts. For example, he had damaged his electronic anklet with a soldering iron the night before his arrest.
