Otherwise there is a risk of drastic human and material losses, Lula warned dozens of heads of state and government in Belém, Brazil, where the UN Climate Change Conference COP30 begins next week. According to scientific calculations, the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees is hardly achievable.
"COP30 will be the COP of truth," said Lula. It is the first time that a climate summit has been held in the Amazon - and there is "no greater symbol for the cause of the environment than the Amazon rainforest" with its thousands of species and plants.
What is the world doing to prevent collapse?
He called on the international community to show more "courage and determination" in the fight against global warming. "It is time to take the warnings of science seriously." The climate crisis can only be solved with global justice, he said. "Climate justice is an ally in the fight against hunger and poverty," said Lula.
With the COP30 in the Amazon region, Brazil is emphasizing the importance of reconciling economic development and environmental protection. "The inhabitants of the Amazon are now rightly asking what the rest of the world is doing to prevent the collapse of their home," said the head of state.
