Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has reported on a visit to Ukrainian forces in Zaporizhia - and has been heavily criticized by Moscow for his trip. The spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, even described Johnson as a "scoundrel".

Johnson described the details of his visit to the region of the embattled Ukrainian city in detail in an article published on Friday for the tabloid newspaper "Daily Mail". According to reports, a documentary is also due to be published soon. According to pictures published by the Ukrainians, Johnson was already in Ukraine at the end of February.

In the article, the ex-prime minister accuses Western states of not doing enough against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. "Welcome back to the so-called 'kill zone', and welcome back to the war that the West is in danger of forgetting," he writes.

Ukraine has been fighting for freedom for years. The "simple goal" of this fight is "supposedly" also agreed upon in Europe and the USA. "And yet not a single head of state or government in any of these Western capitals is currently prepared to do enough to achieve this goal," says Johnson.

Sharp criticism from Moscow

Johnson was still head of government when the war broke out in 2022, but then resigned from the post. Russia accused Johnson, particularly during his time as Prime Minister, of supporting a military conflict with Russia and having no interest in a peaceful solution to the Ukraine conflict.

Commenting on his deployment in the war zone, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said: "Thanks to Boris Johnson, who has shown what the forces of evil look like - nobody could have done it better." According to Moscow's accusation, the Briton was "doing PR at the cost of human lives". "Johnson was personally involved in turning away from the negotiation process and escalating the conflict. A villain who has returned to the scene of the crime."
