In return, the UK's National Health Service (NHS) will be able to spend more money on US medicines.

Pharmaceutical products are among the UK's most important exports to the USA. According to the BBC, the United States is the largest market for the British pharmaceutical companies GSK and AstraZeneca. Both invest billions in the USA.

First agreement in the customs dispute in spring

The US deal with the United Kingdom is to be valid for three years. EU pharmaceutical imports into the USA are subject to a 15 percent tariff. US President Donald Trump had threatened to impose even higher tariffs of up to 100 percent in September, but backed down again.

In spring, the UK and the United States agreed on a basic tariff deal. Most British products will be subject to a 10 percent tariff when imported into the USA. In addition, the first 100,000 vehicles from the UK per year will also be subject to a 10 percent duty - each additional vehicle will be subject to a 25 percent duty.
