Great Britain will send its aircraft carrier battle group to the North Atlantic and far north this year. This was announced by Prime Minister Keir Starmer during the Munich Security Conference after NATO launched the "Arctic Sentry" mission in response to the Greenland conflict.

The group will be led by HMS Prince of Wales and will operate together with the USA, Canada and other NATO allies - as a strong sign of commitment to Euro-Atlantic security, said Starmer.

The increased NATO military presence in the Arctic is intended to improve surveillance of Greenland and deterrence of the superpowers Russia and China. The aim is to secure one of the strategically most important and at the same time climatically most challenging areas, explained Commander-in-Chief Alexus G. Grynkewich.

Talks about Greenland more moderate

The deployment was suggested in order to defuse the dispute over Greenland. US President Donald Trump had at times used threats of punitive tariffs to force the sale of the huge island to his country. He justified his approach by claiming that the territory, which belongs to Denmark, would otherwise not be safe from Russia and China. Talks are now taking place on a much more moderate level.

"Security in the Arctic is of great importance to us all and we must do more," said Starmer. He was pleased with the dialog that should have taken place from the outset.
