Germany is to take part in a fact-finding mission to Greenland. The Bundeswehr will send a transport aircraft with 13 Bundeswehr personnel to Nuuk on Thursday morning, the Ministry of Defense announced in Berlin: "At the invitation of Denmark, Germany will participate in an exploration mission in Greenland from 15 to 17 January 2026 together with other European nations."

The announcement follows multiple statements by US President Donald Trump, who wants to buy the huge Arctic island or bring it under US control by other means. Trump justifies this on the grounds of security for the region and the US population due to a threat from China and Russia. Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and therefore also part of NATO and an ally of the USA.
Framework for possible military contributions
The aim of the Bundeswehr mission is to "explore the framework for possible military contributions to support Denmark in ensuring security in the region, for example for maritime surveillance capabilities", the Ministry of Defense announced.
Denmark had previously stated that it would increase its military presence on Greenland. Sweden and Norway also announced support.
The USA has the Pituffik Space Base on Greenland on the basis of agreements with Denmark.
