At the beginning of March, the canton of Bern will open a transit site for foreign travelers in the municipality of Wileroltigen in the canton of Seeland. There will be space for 36 mobile homes on the site on the A1 highway.

With the transit site, the canton wants to offer foreign travelers the possibility of a regulated stay, as it wrote in a press release on Friday. The site should also help to avoid stops at undesirable locations.

The opening of the transit site was preceded by years of searching for a location. The people of Bern ultimately approved the project loan of 3.3 million Swiss francs for the site in Wileroltigen by a narrow margin, but there was strong opposition from the surrounding communities.

There are too few stopping places for travelers in Switzerland. As a result, there is constant competition for the scarce space - and illegal land seizures, which in turn leads to conflicts with the local population.
