According to the aid organization, staff reported completely confusing conditions, overcrowded clinics and confused people. Even before the current fighting, the situation was already catastrophic for the people. Nevertheless, Caritas wants to continue its aid in Goma.
After the rebel militia M23 entered the strategically important provincial capital in North Kivu, it is currently unclear who controls the city. UN staff report bodies in the streets. Hundreds of thousands of people are on the run.
According to Caritas International, around 26 million people in the Democratic Republic of Congo are dependent on humanitarian aid. However, because of the fighting, people can no longer be provided with the most basic necessities, according to Richard Kabuyre, a Caritas Goma employee.
According to him, the majority of internally displaced people have now left the refugee camps around the city.
