This means that the mourning flag will remain in place beyond Biden's term of office. On January 20, Donald Trump will be sworn in for his second term as president. During his first term in the White House, Trump also had the flags flown at half-mast for 30 days following the death of former US President George H. W. Bush in 2018.
On the planned day of mourning on January 9, Biden said: "I call on the people of America to gather in their place of worship on this day to remember President James Earl Carter Jr. I invite people around the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn prayer."
The 39th President of the United States died on Sunday at the age of 100 in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family, according to Carter's foundation. He reigned in the White House from 1977 to 1981.
