Legal success for US President Donald Trump: a court has dropped the case against the Republican over allegations of attempted voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election in the US state of Georgia. The judge granted a motion by the public prosecutor's office in Georgia to end the proceedings. The US broadcaster CNN quoted the recently appointed public prosecutor Peter Skandalakis with concerns as to whether the case could be dealt with swiftly. In his opinion, it would not be in the interests of the citizens of Georgia to pursue this case for another five to ten years, Skandalakis said.

What were the allegations?

In 2020, Democrat Joe Biden won the presidential election against Trump. The Republican narrowly lost in Georgia. In the indictment, Trump and several alleged accomplices were accused, among other things, of urging public officials to violate their oath of office in order to subsequently overturn the election result in Georgia. To this day, Trump does not concede his election defeat, but claims to have been cheated out of victory by electoral fraud. This has been refuted.

Some of Trump's former associates entered into an agreement with the public prosecutor's office in the proceedings and pleaded guilty.

Trump won the presidential election against Democrat Kamala Harris in November 2024 and is currently serving his second term.
