A Turkish court has accepted the indictment against imprisoned opposition politician Ekrem Imamoglu, which calls for several thousand years in prison. This was reported by the state news agency Anadolu.

The politician is accused, among other things, of founding and leading a criminal organization as well as bribery and money laundering. In addition to Imamoglu, more than 400 other people have been charged.

Imamoglu is considered a promising opponent of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He was arrested in March on terror and corruption charges and removed as mayor of Istanbul. The Istanbul public prosecutor's office is demanding a total of more than 2,400 years in prison for Imamoglu for 142 offenses. His CHP party has described the charges as "political propaganda". Experts believe that the trial could last up to eight years.
