The chatbot ChatGPT performs better as a couple's therapist than real psychotherapists in a new study. In the study, AI-generated answers were rated as more helpful on average than those of therapists.

In addition, the study participants were barely able to distinguish whether an answer was written by a therapist or by ChatGPT, as the study by researchers from the USA and Switzerland published on Wednesday in the journal PLOS Mental Health shows.

According to experts, however, the study does not provide sufficient proof that artificial intelligence (AI) can actually provide treatment.

For the study, the researchers had 13 therapists and ChatGPT 4.0 answer various statements from fictitious patients. 830 study participants then had to guess whether the answer came from a human or from the AI and how well it fulfilled the so-called effectiveness factors of psychotherapy.
