China has accused the USA of cyber attacks on a central state time authority. According to the Ministry of State Security, the US intelligence agency NSA is said to have attacked the National Time Service Center in Xi'an since March 2022.

The attacks began via security vulnerabilities in employees' cell phones, and later computers at the center were also affected, according to a statement.

Mutual accusations

The center is responsible for the provision and dissemination of official time in China, which is the basis for the operation of communication networks, financial systems and the power supply. According to the Chinese, such attacks could cause serious disruption. Despite its size, China only has one time zone nationwide.

There was initially no reaction from the USA to the accusations. Both sides repeatedly accuse each other of cyber attacks.
