China has expressed concern about the situation in the Gaza Strip following Israel's night-time air strikes against the Islamist Hamas.

The People's Republic is "highly concerned" and hopes that all sides will support the effective implementation of the ceasefire, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning in Beijing. The parties should avoid actions that could escalate the situation and prevent a major humanitarian catastrophe, she explained.

Previously, around two months after the start of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, Israel's military had resumed massive attacks on Hamas throughout the coastal strip. China sees itself as a strategic partner of countries in the Middle East. Foreign Minister Wang Yi has repeatedly emphasized that the Gaza Strip belongs to the Palestinians. Changing this status by force would only bring "new chaos", he said earlier this month.
