The two are due to meet in the southern city of Busan on Thursday to discuss issues of mutual interest, according to the Foreign Ministry in Beijing.

According to official spokesman Guo Jiakun, diplomacy between the two heads of state plays a strategic role in US-China relations. Beijing is willing to work with the US to achieve positive results in the meeting and give new impetus to the stable development of relations between the world's two largest economies, Guo said.

Meeting on the sidelines of the Apec summit

Trump had also already announced the meeting with Xi. It will take place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit in nearby Gyeongju, which China will chair next year.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has not disclosed what Xi and Trump will actually discuss. However, the list of topics is likely to include US tariffs on Chinese imports and China's export controls on key raw materials.
