The Central Committee of the Communist Party appointed Zhang Shengmin, the former disciplinary chief of the military, as the new vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, which is chaired by State and Party leader Xi Jinping. This was announced by the Central Committee after the conclusion of its four-day plenary session in Beijing.
Several high-ranking generals, including the previous vice-chairman He Weidong, had previously been dismissed for "serious violations of discipline and laws" - a phrase that usually covers corruption and abuse of power in China. Zhang, who is considered a close confidant of Xi, was previously responsible for anti-corruption investigations in the military.
Xi wants to tighten control
The People's Liberation Army has been at the center of Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign for years. Time and again, generals have been stripped of their powers, particularly in the strategically important missile force, which manages China's nuclear arsenal. Experts see the latest cases not only as an attempt to curb corruption, but also as Xi's efforts to further consolidate his control over the military.
