The important round of negotiations on a possible ceasefire in the Gaza war is to take place in Qatar's capital Doha on Thursday. This was reported to Deutsche Presse-Agentur by circles familiar with the talks.

CIA chief William Burns, Qatar's Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Egypt's intelligence chief Abbas Kamel are to take part in the negotiations as mediators. David Barnea, head of the Mossad foreign intelligence service, is expected to represent Israel.

As Israel and the Islamist Hamas are not negotiating directly with each other, Qatar, Egypt and the USA are acting as mediators. The Islamist Hamas does not want to take part in the talks without a clear plan to implement US President Joe Biden's proposals for a ceasefire. According to the Wall Street Journal, however, Arab mediators want to inform Hamas of the points discussed after the talks.

Thursday's talks are seen as a decisive moment in the attempt to achieve a ceasefire and an exchange of hostages for prisoners in the Gaza war. It is hoped that a breakthrough could also prevent a major retaliatory strike by Iran against Israel and a significant expansion of the war.
