On Thursday morning, the city of Zurich covered up two Moor inscriptions on houses in the Niederdorf district. The city had previously fought all the way to the Federal Supreme Court for permission to cover the inscriptions.

The covering of the two municipal properties was reversible, as the city announced on Thursday. According to the city, the inscriptions "Zum Mohrenkopf" and "Haus zum Mohrentanz" have a racist effect.

The city's "Racism in Public Space" project group came to the conclusion that contextualization is not sufficient for these signs in public spaces. At both locations, a board with a QR code provides information about the background to the covering.

The covering was preceded by a legal dispute that lasted for years. The city council wanted to have the inscriptions covered as early as 2021. However, the Zurich Heritage Society took the matter to court and ultimately lost before the Federal Supreme Court.
