Concerns about progress in the fight against AIDS and HIV

The United Nations (UN) program to combat the immunodeficiency disease AIDS (Unaids) warned at the start of the World AIDS Conference in Munich that funding cuts and increasing discrimination against some groups of people are jeopardizing the goal.

The rights of affected groups in particular must be protected. These include men who have sex with men, transgender people, intravenous drug users and sex workers, according to a summary of the report.

According to data from Unaids, around 1.3 million people were newly infected with the virus last year. There were very different developments in individual countries. The interim target was to reduce the annual number of new infections to below 370,000 by 2025. In 2023, however, the figure was still 3.5 times higher.
