Andrea Gmür-Schönenberger, a member of the Lucerne Council of States, has decided not to run for the Federal Council following the resignation of Federal Councillor Viola Amherd. Gmür announced on X that she would continue to devote all her energy to her role as a member of the Council of States.

She had been encouraged from many sides to put herself forward as a candidate to succeed Amherd. It was only this great encouragement that prompted her to seriously consider a candidacy in the first place, Gmür wrote in a press release on Friday.
"However, I have come to the conclusion that I will not run for office. I want to continue to give my all as a member of the Council of States for the canton of Lucerne: For a secure and sovereign Switzerland. For first-class education. For town and country," says Gmür.
As President of the Security Policy Committee of the Council of States, her focus will continue to be on strengthening defense capabilities. Security means freedom - but neither can be had for free, said the 60-year-old.
