In Algeria, the Constitutional Court has officially confirmed the victory of head of state Abdelmadjid Tebboune in the presidential election, but corrected the result downwards. Tebboune won 84.3 percent of the vote, as reported by the state agency APS. The final result was ten percentage points lower than the preliminary result announced the day after the election on September 7, when Tebboune was awarded 94.6 percent of the vote. Despite the additional hundreds of thousands of votes attributed to them during the verification process, the two opposing candidates had no chance at all. Tebboune therefore faces another five years in office.

At just 46%, voter turnout was similarly low as five years ago. The victory therefore has a bitter aftertaste for Tebboune and is also an expression of frustration among many people in the North African country. In the last election in 2019, voter turnout was historically low at just under 40%.
