A judge issued a temporary injunction which, according to the court, will remain in force until a hearing has taken place in the matter. This should take place by April 8 at the latest.
Several groups, including opposition politicians, had submitted petitions to the court against the government's decision.
Israel's government had approved the highly controversial dismissal of the domestic intelligence chief last night despite mass protests. Ronen Bar will end his mandate on April 10, unless a successor is appointed before then, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced.
Netanyahu did not come off well in an investigation by the domestic intelligence agency Shin Bet into mistakes that made the Hamas massacre in Israel on October 7, 2023 possible.
In addition, Shin Bet is investigating alleged illegal relationships between Netanyahu's confidants and Qatar. The country is one of the negotiators in indirect talks with Hamas, but is also considered a supporter of the terrorist organization.
