After her arrest, she was taken to a detention facility 2,500 kilometers away in the state of Louisiana. A federal judge has now ruled that she must be returned to Vermont by May 1, according to the ABC channel and the Boston Globe newspaper. A bail hearing will then take place there. The judge also spoke of "significant constitutional concerns" in the case of the arrest.

Disturbing images of the arrest

Images from a surveillance camera, which were circulated in US media, showed several men in dark civilian clothes, some wearing hoodies, approaching the woman, who was breaking her fast. The frightened-looking woman is surrounded and then taken away.

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell had described the images of the arrest as disturbing. According to media reports, the student had a valid visa, but a statement from the Department of Homeland Security on X said that a visa is a privilege, not a right. The student had campaigned for the terrorist Hamas. According to media reports, she was a co-author of an article in a 2024 student newspaper calling on the university to recognize that genocide against Palestinians was taking place.

The arrest of Palestinian student Machmud Chalil caused the biggest stir in the USA. According to his lawyer, the graduate of Columbia University in New York has a green card and therefore an unlimited residence permit in the USA. The US government wants to deport him and accuses him, among other things, of distributing flyers with the Islamist Hamas logo on campus. He is also being held in Louisiana.
