The Czech government has decided to significantly increase defense spending by 2030. Instead of the current 2.0 percent, 3.0 percent of gross domestic product will then be spent on this area. This was announced by the liberal-conservative head of government Petr Fiala after a cabinet meeting.

This is to be achieved through annual increases in the defense budget of 0.2 percentage points. "This shows our partners that they can count on us," said Fiala in Prague. He justified the move with the war in Ukraine, less than 400 kilometers away, and changes in the international order. "We must be prepared to defend ourselves," emphasized Fiala.
The Czech Republic has been a member of NATO since 1999. The Central European country with a population of just under eleven million has recently initiated several major procurement projects. Plans include the purchase of air defense systems, German Leopard battle tanks and Swedish CV90 infantry fighting vehicles.
