At least seven people have been killed in an explosion in the Afghan capital Kabul. In addition to the dead, 20 injured people were admitted to hospital, reported the operator of the clinic, the aid organization Emergency.

The cause of the explosion was initially unknown. It occurred near a hotel in a busy district, as the police spokesman responsible for Kabul told the news agency DPA.

The Afghan broadcaster Tolonews reported, citing security sources, that the explosion had targeted Chinese citizens. A video showed smoke, debris and injured people on a street.

Since the Taliban took power four and a half years ago, attacks have declined in large parts of the country. However, the Islamic State (IS) terrorist militia continues to claim responsibility for attacks.
