Cardinals, members of the Curia and employees of the Vatican can bid farewell at the open coffin. The Argentinian-born Pope, who headed the Catholic Church for more than twelve years, died in his residence on Easter Monday at the age of 88.
The coffin stands in the chapel in front of an altar where Francis often celebrated early mass. According to the Vatican, the dead pope is wearing a red robe and a white bishop's mitre. A rosary is wrapped around his folded hands. A member of the Swiss Guard stands guard to the right and left.
Burial possibly on Saturday
In the course of the week, the body will be transferred to St. Peter's Basilica, where the faithful from all over the world will be able to bid farewell at the open coffin. The exact date will be determined by a college of cardinals, as will the date of the funeral. Saturday in particular is being discussed for the large funeral service. Guests of state from all over the world are expected to attend. US President Donald Trump has also announced his attendance.
