This was reported by state radio. The victim's surviving relatives had demanded retribution in accordance with Islamic jurisprudence.
According to the radio station, the man had tried to conceal the murder of his wife a good five years ago and stage it as a natural death.
It was the second publicly executed death sentence in the province within a short period of time. A week ago, a man was executed in Semnan who had been sentenced to death for the rape of two women. Public executions are actually rare in Iran. The death penalty in the Islamic Republic is usually carried out by hanging.
Human rights activists have been criticizing the rigorous application of the death penalty in Iran for years. They accuse the judiciary of using executions to intimidate critical voices. According to Amnesty International, more executions were carried out in 2025 than at any time in the last 15 years. As of the end of September, the organization had already counted more than 1,000 executions.
