According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, Russia has killed at least five people and injured a further ten in new heavy airstrikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. In a combined attack on the country, Moscow used more than 50 missiles and cruise missiles as well as around 500 drones, Selenskyj announced. According to the authorities, four people died in the Lviv (Lviv) region in western Ukraine on the Polish border alone.

It was a family of four that was wiped out; a girl was among the dead, Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha told X. In order to stop the terror, stronger transatlantic pressure on Russia was needed. Sybiha also said that anyone buying energy from Russia was helping to finance the crimes against Ukraine.

Selenskyj: Ceasefire in the sky possible

The Zaporizhzhya, Sumy, Kharkiv, Odessa and Kherson regions, among others, were also affected by the Russian attacks, Selenskyi added. According to the authorities, there was at least one death in the southern region of Zaporizhia - in addition to numerous injuries. Russia once again targeted vital infrastructure in the regions. Rescue and reconstruction work was underway in many places, said Selenskyj.

According to the Ministry of Energy, there were major power outages in Zaporizhia and other parts of the country. In some cases, the supply had to be shut down for the duration of repairs.

"We need more protection and faster implementation of all defense agreements, especially in the field of air defense, to take the sense out of this air terror," said Selenskyj. A ceasefire in the skies is possible, the President said, without giving details. This could pave the way for real diplomacy. America and Europe must now act to force Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin to give in.

Major fire in industrial park in Lviv

Lviv in particular, which is important for the supply of Western military goods, was hit harder by the Russian attacks than it has been for a long time. Mayor Andrij Sadowyj published a photo on Telegram showing a building in the Sparrow industrial park engulfed in flames.

The head of the town hall stated that there had not been a single military target on the site. According to the authorities, there were several explosions in the city as a result of drone attacks. According to Sadovyi, public transport in the city had to be temporarily suspended. There were also power cuts.

Poland: no airspace violation

According to the military, the fighter jets and activated ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems that were temporarily deployed on the Polish side during the attacks in the neighboring country returned to normal operation. "We would like to inform you that no violation of Polish airspace has been observed," it said in a statement published on X.

The situation in Ukraine is being constantly monitored in order to defend the security of Polish airspace, according to the military. Last night, F-35 fighter jets from the Dutch air force also helped to ensure the protection of Poland.

It has been routine for many months for Poland to fly fighter jets as a precautionary measure during air raids on western Ukraine.

Russia: Ukraine's energy infrastructure shelled

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed the use of the weapons systems mentioned by Kiev. The attacks were directed against Ukraine's energy infrastructure, the ministry announced in Moscow. Military positions were also targeted, including an artillery system of the HIMARS multiple rocket launcher in the Kharkiv region. The ministry claimed that all targets had been destroyed. As usual, there was no confirmation from Ukraine. The information provided by the warring parties cannot be independently verified.

Russia had already massively shelled the country's gas infrastructure on Saturday night. Ukraine accused Russia of wanting to destroy the country's heating systems during the cold season. Russia repeatedly plunges people in the country into cold and darkness with attacks in the fall and winter.

Moscow's attacks are also seen as a reaction to the recent Ukrainian drone strikes against Russian oil refineries and fuel depots in many parts of the country. The attacks have now led to a shortage of petrol and diesel, which is why Russia has extended its export ban on these fuels until the end of the year.

Russia has been waging a destructive war of aggression against Ukraine for more than three and a half years.
