The Democratic US presidential candidate Kamala Harris has announced a non-partisan advisory committee in the event of an election victory. This should provide advice on political issues, Harris said at an event organized by Republicans who support Harris in Scottsdale in the hard-fought state of Arizona. The Democrat had previously announced her intention to appoint a Republican to her cabinet. She is running against Republican Donald Trump in the presidential election on November 5.

Harris also spoke about her admiration for the late Republican Senator John McCain from Arizona. The Democrat also emphasized that the USA is a role model in the world. The 59-year-old was cheered at the event at a golf club with around 150 spectators - shouts of "Kamala, Kamala" rang out. Beforehand, people had waited a good half an hour in sweltering heat of around 37 degrees for admission. Water and umbrellas were handed out.
Arizona is a so-called swing state - Trump won here in the 2016 presidential election and Democrat Biden narrowly won in 2020. Harris hopes to win the state in the south-west of the USA again. In a swing state like Arizona, votes from traditionally Republican voters can tip the scales for the Democrat. Harris is therefore courting them in particular. After her speech, she took plenty of time for photos.
