According to media reports, hundreds of people in Greenland have protested against US President Donald Trump's takeover plans. "Our country. Our choice. Our freedom," wrote Demokraatit leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen on Facebook with pictures of the demonstration in the capital Nuuk.

This week, Trump once again flirted with the idea of incorporating the world's largest island into the USA. During a meeting with Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House on Thursday, he responded to a reporter's question about his plans for a possible annexation: "Well, I think it will happen."

Greenlandic politicians reacted angrily. This is a "completely unacceptable" approach, said the acting head of government Múte B. Egede told the Greenlandic newspaper "Sermitsiaq" during the demonstration in Nuuk on Saturday. People also took to the streets in other towns on the island.

Egede's party, Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA), suffered heavy losses in the parliamentary elections on Tuesday. Nielsen's social-liberal Demokraatit party became the new strongest force. The Demokraatit election manifesto stated: "Greenland is not for sale. Not today. Not tomorrow. Not ever."
