Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is traveling to Hungary on Wednesday. He will meet his counterpart Viktor Orban there, among others, the head of government's office announced. It is Netanyahu's first trip to Europe since the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against him last November for his actions in the Gaza war. The return journey is scheduled for Sunday.

Orban demonstratively extended the invitation to Netanyahu after the arrest warrant was issued. The ICC's decision overrides international law and "adds fuel to the fire", Orban said at the time. "That is why I will invite Benjamin Netanyahu today, which will have no consequences for him. We will reject the arrest warrant if he accepts the invitation."

Orban has long maintained good relations with Netanyahu. Israel's head of government thanked him for his support, as Netanyahu's office announced at the time. Hungary stands on the side of justice.

Hungary has ratified the Rome Statute as the basis of the Criminal Court and would therefore actually be obliged to execute its arrest warrants.
