The movement is made up of teenagers and young adults born between 1995 and 2010 who are campaigning for a Mexico that is safer, fairer and free from corruption.
According to the Ministry of Security, hooded men attacked the police on the fringes of their largely peaceful demonstration in the historic center of the capital. In the process, 60 police officers were slightly injured and 40 others were so seriously injured that they had to be taken to hospital. According to media reports, 20 demonstrators were also injured during the riots. According to the authorities, 20 suspects were arrested after the riots.
The largely young demonstrators had taken to the streets following the murder of a provincial mayor and were also protesting against the rampant politically motivated violence in the Latin American country. Left-wing President Claudia Sheinbaum accused them of being vicarious agents of the conservative opposition.
"Generation Z" protests all over the world
In recent months, "Generation Z" protests have taken place in various countries - for example in Nepal, Morocco, Madagascar and Peru. Participants have taken to the streets against entrenched political systems, a lack of reforms and opportunities for advancement, as well as social exclusion.
While the specific concerns may differ from country to country, the movements are united by the young age of the demonstrators, spontaneous organization via social networks and shared symbols such as the skull and crossbones flag from a Japanese manga.
