According to an economist, state structures in Lebanon urgently need to be strengthened following the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. "Only state-building will save Lebanon," wrote Alia Mubajid on X. She has been working on economic issues in the Middle East for banks and governments for 25 years.

Because Hezbollah has been severely weakened following the killing of Nasrallah, there are concerns about a new outbreak of conflict in the country, which is strongly divided along sectarian lines. The anger of Nasrallah's supporters over his killing could also be partially vented in the country and on the streets. A civil war raged in the country until 1990.
The head of parliament, Nabih Berri, must allow parliament to convene in order to elect a new president, wrote Mubajid. Due to a dispute over the succession, the country has been without a head of state for two years and the government is only in office on a caretaker basis. In addition, the government must declare a state of emergency, deploy the army nationwide, mobilize donations to support the many displaced people and prepare a plan to improve the economic situation, Mubajid wrote.
