The EU and Canada want to work more closely together on defense and the economy. At a summit meeting in Brussels, both sides signed an agreement in which they confirmed that they would continue to support Ukraine, exchange more information on defense issues and work together for a rules-based international order.

"As the most European of the non-European countries, Canada looks first to the European Union to build a better world," said Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney. Comprehensive negotiations are underway in areas such as trade, security, digitalization and climate.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that Canada was in a unique position with its resources. The aim is to deepen cooperation with Canada on trade in raw materials.
