The European Union's budget of almost 200 billion euros for the coming year has been finalized. The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, signed the 2025 EU budget in Strasbourg after it was approved by MEPs, thus putting it into force.
Prior to this, the EU countries had also given the green light for the agreement previously reached by negotiators from the Parliament and the member states.
In mid-November, the negotiators had agreed on a budget of 199.4 billion euros. The budget for next year is strongly focused on the EU's most important political priorities, the EU countries had subsequently stated. It also addresses the current difficult geopolitical context.
Germany contributes almost a quarter
The plan for 2025 is the fifth in the so-called Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for the period 2021-2027. The long-term EU budget comprises around 1.1 trillion euros. As the Union's largest net contributor, Germany is contributing almost a quarter of the funds. The German government generally emphasizes that Germany also benefits more from the EU single market than any other European economy.
