"I think that the United States also has the task of exerting more pressure on Russia," said the former head of government of Estonia at a meeting with European foreign ministers in Madrid.
Russia must agree to a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine and take a step forward. This could, for example, consist of returning deported Ukrainian children or releasing prisoners of war.
In addition to Kallas, the foreign ministers from Poland, France and Spain as well as EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius took part in the consultations on the ongoing Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. A joint declaration was planned at the end of the meeting, in which the current efforts of US President Trump for a ceasefire were also to be addressed.
At the meeting, Kubilius called for the immediate implementation of the rearmament strategy recently presented by the EU Commission. He warned that simply reading this to Putin would not deter him.
