The European Commission has presented a plan to speed up the deportation of rejected asylum seekers. Among other things, it plans to increase the pressure on migrants who do not cooperate in the repatriation process, according to a proposed regulation by the Brussels authority. For example, there is a threat of benefit cuts.

In addition, the mutual recognition of return decisions between EU member states is to be facilitated in order to speed up procedures. EU states are also to be given the option of accommodating rejected asylum seekers in special deportation centers outside the EU.

The proposal aims to increase the efficiency of return procedures and create standardized rules throughout the EU. According to the Commission, only around one in five migrants against whom a return decision has been issued currently leaves the EU. The key elements:

* Obligation to cooperate: rejected asylum seekers should be obliged to actively cooperate in their repatriation. This includes, among other things, disclosing their identity and not providing false information. Anyone who refuses to do so should face sanctions - such as a reduction in benefits or a longer entry ban.

* Tougher measures for security threats: Stricter rules are to apply to people who are classified as a security risk. For example, the grounds for detention are to be extended.

* Mutual recognition of return decisions: As a rule, member states are to mutually recognize return decisions within the EU in order to speed up procedures.

* Return centers: Rejected asylum seekers can be taken to facilities outside the EU in order to be deported from there. Human rights standards must be observed and implementation monitored. Minors and families with children are exempt.

Following the presentation of the legislative proposal by the Brussels authority, it must be examined and adopted by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union. The reform is one of the central projects of the EU Commission under Ursula von der Leyen.

Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser welcomed the proposal from Brussels. "We need an effective return system at European level. The focus must be on comprehensive obligations for those obliged to leave the country and sanctions in the event of their violation," said the SPD politician. Bureaucratic procedures must be avoided
