The EU does not intend to implement the planned counter-tariffs on US products for the time being. This was announced by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in response to the recent decision by US President Donald Trump to suspend certain tariffs.

Following major turbulence on the stock and financial markets, Trump had surprisingly decided to grant many countries a 90-day break from certain tariffs. However, he took even tougher action against China and increased the duties on Chinese imports even further.

Giving negotiations a chance

Von der Leyen stated: "We have taken note of President Trump's announcement. We want to give negotiations a chance." The EU countermeasures were strongly supported by the member states, but are to be suspended for 90 days. The first measures should actually have been applied next week.

Von der Leyen emphasized: "If the negotiations do not proceed satisfactorily, our countermeasures will come into force." Preparations are also underway for further countermeasures. All options are on the table.

On Wednesday, the EU states cleared the way for initial counter-tariffs of between 10 and 25 percent in response to the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. Special levies on jeans and motorcycles from the USA, among other things, were to take effect from mid-April.

Further counter-tariffs were to be imposed in mid-May and at the end of the year - which would have affected foods such as beef, poultry and citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits.
