As Costa announced in Brussels, they will be in the Ukrainian capital next Monday to reaffirm their support for the "heroic Ukrainian people and the democratically elected President Volodymyr Zelensky".
By adding "the democratically elected president", Costa sent a clear signal against statements made by US President Donald Trump, who on Wednesday described Zelenskyi as a dictator and not democratically legitimized.
The EU Commission had already announced at the beginning of the week that von der Leyen and Commissioners wanted to travel to Ukraine to mark the anniversary of the Russian invasion. However, no details were available at the time.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will also visit the Ukrainian capital on Monday. "On Monday, I will be in Kiev to reaffirm Spain's support for Ukrainian democracy and President Zelensky", the socialist politician announced on the online platform X.
