As the EuroAirport media office announced on Monday in response to an inquiry, this is 116 people more than on the previous record day, October 11, 2024, when 34,355 passengers were counted.
It is still being clarified whether Euroairport also set a new weekend passenger record, the media office added. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Basel Airport handled 97,633 passengers - 18.4 percent more than on the same weekend last year.
A total of 220,000 people used Zurich Airport over the weekend. On Saturday there were slightly fewer than 110,000 people, on Sunday slightly more than this figure, as a media spokeswoman also announced on Monday in response to an inquiry. This meant that the previous daily record of 115,000 passengers from July 2019 was not broken.
However, the media spokesperson spoke of an intensive weekend with very good operations. Zurich Airport is the largest airport in Switzerland. At the beginning of July, it announced that it was expecting the most passengers in the current summer vacation period on the weekend of 19/20 July.
Peak in Geneva to follow
All three Swiss national airports had been preparing for a strong summer passenger rush since the beginning of this year. The ground handling company Swissport, which operates at all three national airports, massively increased its staff in view of the peak travel season.
Those responsible at Geneva Airport said in June that they expected the biggest rush of passengers on Sundays at the end of July and beginning of August, as well as on August 1st. Around 45,000 passengers per day are expected in Geneva during the summer vacations.
