The European Union's common budget for next year, amounting to around 190 billion euros, has been finally adopted. Members of the European Parliament in Strasbourg voted in favor of the 2026 budget, which was then signed by Parliament President Roberta Metsola, thereby putting it into force.

The EU wants to spend more money on defense and border security, but the overall budget will shrink by around ten billion compared to the current budget year.

Negotiators from Parliament and the member states agreed on the budget in mid-November. Negotiations lasted until the early hours of the morning. As usual, the Member States wanted to earmark 186.24 billion euros less money than Parliament's 193.9 billion.

More money for "migration and border management"

According to information from the EU states, the planned expenditure for security and defense will increase by almost 200 million euros to a good 2.8 billion euros. According to this information, around 230 million euros more - and therefore just over 5 billion euros in total - is earmarked for "migration and border management".

According to Parliament, MEPs also secured 372.7 million euros for central programs, including 105 million euros to promote European agricultural products, a priority of Parliament.

The plan for 2026 is the sixth in the so-called Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for the period 2021 to 2027. The EU budget comprises around 1.1 trillion euros. A new multi-year budget from 2028 to 2034 is currently being discussed in Brussels.
